|Pledge Ruled Unconstitutional…It's About Damn Time
|When President Eisenhower signed legislation inserting "under God" after the words "one nation," he wrote that "millions of our schoolchildren will daily proclaim in every city and town, every village and rural schoolhouse, the dedication of our nation and our people to the Almighty."
That is state endorsement of fucking religion.
Ike fucked up. Simple as that. Don't try to make this out to be something that our founding father's would've wanted. Ike signed it in 1954. Ike fucked up.
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,
or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." - what part of that don't you get?
I should be able to pledge my allegiance to this country without accepting that I am the unwitting servant of some jealous and vengeful unseen paranormal entity from dimension X that smiles approvingly over our humble land
It makes me sick that conservatives like to use their "love of God" as some kind of badge of patriotism. Separation of Church in State is as fundamental to the character of our society as the right to freedom of speech, the right to privacy or the right to bear arms. The latter in particular conservatives are famous for take no pause in reminding us of every fucking chance they get.
You laugh when some Mohammad is on television burning an American flag in one hand and yelling at the top of his lungs about establishing the perfect Islamic state after he and his militia take over whatever puppet government we are supporting over there.
Then you look at our President and see that we currently are living under an administration actually pissed off that they can't endorse God themselves and give our tax dollars to further religion to our children and through social programs.
I turn on the news and I see Democrats and Republicans alike in congress talking about being outraged over this decision and threatening to add an amendment to the constitution which will leave the "under God" in the pledge of allegiance.
Is this really the hill that you want to die on?
That is a figure of speech not a threat.
So is this the hill that you want to die on? Is saying "under God" so important that you want to erode part of the essential cornerstones of our society?
I am hoping that at least on the Democratic side of the aisle they are just putting on a front to American conservatives so that Republicans can't spin this so that they look more patriotic to the percentage of our population that actually think Patriotism and love of God are related.
The fact of the matter is Eisenhower was wrong, dead wrong when he signed that into legislation to add that to the pledge of allegiance.
It can be no clearer than in his own words when he explains his intentions behind signing that unconstitutional bill
"the dedication of our people to the Almighty."
I don't understand what the Bush Administration is so fucking upset about.
The government had argued that the religious content of "one nation under God" is minimal.
So fucking what. It should be less than minimal it should be NONE.
Mark my words, the way the Republicans are going to spin this is that the Liberal appellate court is trying to ban the pledge of allegiance like the pledge has always said "under God".
"A profession that we are a nation `under God' is identical, for Establishment Clause purposes, to a profession that we are a nation `under Jesus,' a nation `under Vishnu,' a nation `under Zeus,' or a nation `under no god,' because none of these professions can be neutral with respect to religion," Judge Alfred T. Goodwin wrote for the three-judge panel.
